Bauhaus and Dance

The evening starts with a choreography by Arianna Economou, for which the Knot, a painting with gouache on paper by Anni Albers created in 1947, serves as the inspiration. In her choreographic interpretation of Albers artwork, she traces the movement of the 3 strings, in yellow, red and blue, “taking them for a walk”.

The film Triadic ballet by Oskar Schlemmer leads us directly into the world of Bauhaus and its famous ballet.

After the screening of the film, three dancers take to the stage, in their own self-designed triadic ballet reminiscent costumes. They present a new interpretation of Oskar Schlemmer’s work, almost 100 years after its premiere in 1922.

The costumes – body extensions – , which play a vital role in this dance performance, were created by students under the guidance of Melita Couta at the Department of Design and Multimedia (University of Nicosia).
This event is taking place in collaboration with Dance Gate Lefkosia.
Dance Gate Lefkosia would like to thank Dancehouse Lefkosia for collaboration.

The Ripple Effect_Marina Poyiadji & Nefeli TsioutiThe Ripple Effect
Marina Poyiadji & Nefeli Tsiouti

The work is inspired by Newton’s third law of action-reaction: For every action, there is equal amount of reaction.
When transferring this law from physics to social sciences, one can see that it doesn’t just apply, it actually expands in a chain of reactions. The ripple effect.
There is war on one side of the planet, and the whole word suffers. On the contrary, a colourful bouquet, flaunts a smile on someone.

I am here! Trying to touch you but I can’t. I’m there, still I’m not. Watching you always from afar… thinking I’m near. A void in human contact, and face to face interaction is created between us, through a medium which was supposed to bring us closer.

Demetra Demetriadou

The Choreography focuses on the issue of inner conflict regarding opposite powers at work within us all in the forms of “Friend – Enemy”. There exist moments when a strong opponent, like an invisible enemy comes up as an unsurmountable obstacle to the realization of our dreams. It puts barriers to our “will” using our own insecurities, contradictions, remorse. It sets us on hold as in the betrayal of heroes in Becket’s plays or with the soul simmering like the samovar in Chekhov’s works. How could we find the golden incision?
Let’s finally become the Goddot that we are waiting for and grasp our lives with our own hands, and guide our soul toward our dreams. Only perhaps when the soul stops simmering and begins to impose its “will” to logic, can we then at last reconcile within ourselves the two, thus achieving more harmony and balance to have the courage to live our dreams.

Nasia Kelepeshi

Hello, my name is Nasia and this fluffy Orange Cake is made with FRESH orange juice. The frosting is a combination of SWEET cream butter, CREAM cheese, powdered SUGAR, and orange zest. You can completely cover ME with frosting for a traditional cake, but if you love the look of a NAKED cake, just do a nice “crumb coat” on ME the NIGHT before. This makes a BEAUTIFUL orange cake. To make this Orange Cake EXTRA SPECIAL, you can use BLOOD orange juice.

The ultimate goal of the workshop/performance is creative experimentation (for both the artist and the viewer) with the aim of broadening the limits of our imagination, drawing inspiration from working in pairs and transforming our thoughts into creative actions.

Please note that:
*No prior work as a performer is needed as the performance framework does not follow a specific structure, and can be customized according to the background, influences and the body-of-work of each artist, choreographer, performer, visual artist, etc.

‘Happening’ follows the format of ‘Blind Date’, a series of improvised performances, initiated by the performance artists Jacqueline van de Geere and Demetra Kallitsi, in 2016, Leipzig, Germany. The performances were based on rendez-vous or so called ‘Blind Dates’, between the two artists where they allowed themselves the permission to get to know each other by performing during 3h performance sessions. Demetra and Jacqueline both brought in the space 10 items that were unknown for each other, hoping that these surprise objects will fuel a performative fire. Since 2016, The Blind Date, has been utilised as a format for initiating and organising artistic collaborations between various performance artists in Germany, Canada and Cyprus.

Demetra Kallitsi (born 1989, Nicosia, Cyprus) is a conceptual artist, working in the mediums of performance art, textiles/embroidery and poetry/creative writing. She completed an MA in Fine Arts at The University of Brighton, UK, 2013 and a BA in Visual Arts at the University of Salford, Manchester, UK, 2012. Kallitsi has presented her artwork in solo and collaborative art performances, art exhibitions, short films and theatre plays in Cyprus, Germany, Malta, Italy and the United Kingdom.

In 2016, Kallitsi, in collaboration with Jacqueline van De Geere, co-created ‘Blind Date’; a platform for artistic collaborations in performance art in Germany, Canada and Cyprus. In 2017, she served as the Financial Manager for PRWeile Studio, Berlin, Germany, in 2014-2016 as the Cultural Officer at ARTos Cultural & Research Foundation, Nicosia, Cyprus and in the year 2013 as the Museum Coordinator for the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum, Nicosia, Cyprus. Kallitsi is currently a Coordinator for Xarkis Festival and Artists Residency and a Board Member and Organiser for the cultural organisation Xarkis, Nicosia,Cyprus.

Sites Embodied : Pediaios Project

The opening of Sites Embodied: Pediaios Project on April 1st was a celebration and culmination of 2 months worth of workshops with each involved participant presenting an individual piece of work. The works were developed over sessions directed by Arianna Economou,  researching the Dance House Building as a site for artistic and performative exploration.

Throughout the 2-month period from February till March, workshop participants explored Somatic Movement methodologies to understand the deeper connections between Body and Earth. The works included Somatic Movement Awareness, Embodied Anatomy, Body Maps and Methodologies towards Autobiographical Site-Specific Performance.

Workshop participants explored the potential of the Dancehouse Lefkosia building as Site, along with it’s surrounding area. Initially built by the British as the old Municipal Market of Ayios Andreas, the Dance House building is situated on the banks of the Pedieos River which now acts as a dividing line in the local area. The workshops offered participants a unique opportunity to explore, creatively, the many layers of this unique location; political, historical, cultural and geographical, which were all referenced within the participant’s final pieces.

The opening event of Sites Embodied: Pediaios Project was a diverse range of solo and group performances combining an array of artistic medium, sculpture, spoken word, video and dance all featured throughout the evening. With a great turn out, the opening was an opportunity for participants to share their work with the local community and for all involved to gain a deeper understanding of the Dance House as Site from the complexity of its past through to its exciting future potential.
