Bauhaus and Dance

The evening starts with a choreography by Arianna Economou, for which the Knot, a painting with gouache on paper by Anni Albers created in 1947, serves as the inspiration. In her choreographic interpretation of Albers artwork, she traces the movement of the 3 strings, in yellow, red and blue, “taking them for a walk”.

The film Triadic ballet by Oskar Schlemmer leads us directly into the world of Bauhaus and its famous ballet.

After the screening of the film, three dancers take to the stage, in their own self-designed triadic ballet reminiscent costumes. They present a new interpretation of Oskar Schlemmer’s work, almost 100 years after its premiere in 1922.

The costumes – body extensions – , which play a vital role in this dance performance, were created by students under the guidance of Melita Couta at the Department of Design and Multimedia (University of Nicosia).
This event is taking place in collaboration with Dance Gate Lefkosia.
Dance Gate Lefkosia would like to thank Dancehouse Lefkosia for collaboration.

The Ripple Effect_Marina Poyiadji & Nefeli TsioutiThe Ripple Effect
Marina Poyiadji & Nefeli Tsiouti

The work is inspired by Newton’s third law of action-reaction: For every action, there is equal amount of reaction.
When transferring this law from physics to social sciences, one can see that it doesn’t just apply, it actually expands in a chain of reactions. The ripple effect.
There is war on one side of the planet, and the whole word suffers. On the contrary, a colourful bouquet, flaunts a smile on someone.

Sotiris Sotiriou

I am here! Trying to touch you but I can’t. I’m there, still I’m not. Watching you always from afar… thinking I’m near. A void in human contact, and face to face interaction is created between us, through a medium which was supposed to bring us closer.

Demetra Demetriadou

The Choreography focuses on the issue of inner conflict regarding opposite powers at work within us all in the forms of “Friend – Enemy”. There exist moments when a strong opponent, like an invisible enemy comes up as an unsurmountable obstacle to the realization of our dreams. It puts barriers to our “will” using our own insecurities, contradictions, remorse. It sets us on hold as in the betrayal of heroes in Becket’s plays or with the soul simmering like the samovar in Chekhov’s works. How could we find the golden incision?
Let’s finally become the Goddot that we are waiting for and grasp our lives with our own hands, and guide our soul toward our dreams. Only perhaps when the soul stops simmering and begins to impose its “will” to logic, can we then at last reconcile within ourselves the two, thus achieving more harmony and balance to have the courage to live our dreams.

Orange cake_Nasia Kelepeshi_Artists in Progress 2019Orange cake
Nasia Kelepeshi

Hello, my name is Nasia and this fluffy Orange Cake is made with FRESH orange juice. The frosting is a combination of SWEET cream butter, CREAM cheese, powdered SUGAR, and orange zest. You can completely cover ME with frosting for a traditional cake, but if you love the look of a NAKED cake, just do a nice “crumb coat” on ME the NIGHT before. This makes a BEAUTIFUL orange cake. To make this Orange Cake EXTRA SPECIAL, you can use BLOOD orange juice.
